Part II: Adult Consent Form



Title of research: Evaluating Community Notes on X

Your informed consent is being sought for research. Participation in the research is voluntary.

The purpose of the research: We are researchers at Princeton University conducting research to better understand Twitter/X’s Community Notes platform. In this survey, you will be asked about your experiences with and opinions about Community Notes. People aged 18+ and residing in the United States are eligible to participate. Additionally, participants must have a Community Notes account on Twitter/X and have previously written at least one note OR submitted at least 8 ratings to the Community Notes platform.

The expected duration of the subject's participation: approximately 25 minutes

The procedures that the subject will be asked to follow in the research: Participants will upload their data archive to our research server and may be invited to complete the main survey. This will take up to 25 minutes to complete.

The reasonably foreseeable risks or discomforts to the subject as a result of participation: Risks and discomforts to your participation in this online study are those associated with basic computer tasks, including boredom, fatigue, mild stress, or breach of confidentiality.

The benefits to the subject or to others, e.g., society that may reasonably be expected from the research: The primary benefit to you is the learning experience from participating in a research study and reflection on your interaction with online platforms as a result of the data request process and survey. The benefit to society is contribution to scientific knowledge.

The alternative procedures, if any, that might be advantageous to the subject: We are not aware of any alternative procedures that might be advantageous to the subject.

Compensation: Participants who complete Part II tasks will be compensated $10.00. Compensation will be in the form of a Visa gift card.

Confidentiality: No personally-identifiable information will be collected from you. We will filter participant-submitted archive data to exclude any data files or fields that could readily identify the participant. Any reports and presentations about the findings from this study will not include your name or any other information that could identify you. In some cases, you might provide personal stories or beliefs that we might quote or paraphrase as part of our research findings – any personally identifying information will be removed to protect your privacy. We may share the data we collect in this study with other researchers doing future studies–-if we share your data, we will not include information that could identify you.

Subject’s rights: Your participation is voluntary. You may stop participating at any time by closing the browser window or the program to withdraw from the study.
